Frequently Asked Questions

How can I determine if my produce was organic?

If you want to make sure that you are buying organic produce, look for these three labels:

USDA Organic Certified – Produced by USDA and certified as 100% organic.

Certified Naturally Grown is produce that has met strict organic requirements but not yet been certified by the USDA.

Pastured/Free Range – Produced from animals that live outdoors and graze on grasses or herbs.

These labels are used to indicate that the product meets specified criteria.

  • No pesticides or synthetic fertilizers
  • No genetically altered organisms
  • Animals are never given antibiotics
  • Animals never receive hormones
  • There are no growth-promoting drugs
  • No feed additives
  • No artificial ingredients
  • No irradiation
  • No sewage effluent
  • No GMOs
  • Never gave antibiotics
  • No hormones ever given
  • There are no growth-promoting drugs
  • No feed-additives
  • No artificial ingredients
  • No sewage waste (if it's non-GMO).
  • No irradiation

I hope you found the article useful.

What's the difference between organic foods and inorganic food?

Organic food is produced without pesticides, chemical fertilizers, sewage sludge, irradiation, or genetic modification. Organic farming practices contribute to soil health, water purity, and animal welfare.

Inorganic foods can be grown using pesticides, chemical fertilizers and sewage sludge. Irradiated foods are treated with radiation; genetically modified organisms (GMO) are created through biological engineering techniques.

"Organic" and "natural" are often interchangeable. But, "natural" does not necessarily refer to organic. Products labelled "natural", however, may contain synthetic chemicals.

Because organic produce contains fewer harmful chemicals, pesticides, and fertilizers than conventional produce it is more nutritious. In addition, organic farmers do not use artificial fertilizers, hormones, antibiotics, or pesticides.

What is an inorganic food?

Organic food is not produced with pesticides or artificial fertilizers. These chemicals can cause health problems in organic foods.

Organic food can be grown without chemical fertilizers, pesticides herbicides, fungicides, and other harmful substances. These chemicals can be dangerous for both humans and animals.

Inorganic foods include meat, fish and eggs, dairy, butter, yogurts, honey, yogurt, honey, grains and vegetables, as well as spices, herbs, fruits, and spices.

Organic refers to how an agricultural product was grown. Organic farming uses natural methods to grow crops. Conventional farming uses pesticides and synthetic fertilizers.

Organic foods must comply with strict guidelines set forth by the U.S. Department of Agriculture. All organic food must comply with the National Organic Program Standards. This means that it must not contain prohibited materials like antibiotics, growth hormones or genetically modified organisms (GMOs), as well as industrial solvents. Organic food must also be free from toxic chemicals, petroleum based fertilizers, sewage effluents and ionizing radiation.

Why should organic be my first choice?

Conventional agriculture has been linked to several health problems, including asthma, allergies, obesity, diabetes, cancer, birth defects, hormone imbalances, and other diseases. You must make healthy choices when buying food.

The Environmental Working Group (EWG), offers these tips to help you choose "cleaner" foods:

Always purchase organic fruits, vegetables and other products whenever possible.

USDA organic labels should be used on meat, poultry and eggs as well as milk, cheese, yogurt, butter, honey, and other dairy products.

Avoid processed foods that claim to be "natural" and "no additives."

Be sure to read all ingredient labels. If an ingredient isn’t listed, it might be added during processing.

You should choose fresh meats rather than frozen or canned. Foods that are frozen or canned often have less nutritionally-rich ingredients, such as high fructosecorn syrup.

What are organic fruits and vegetables?

Organic food does not contain pesticides or synthetic fertilizers. Organic foods contain more nutrients like vitamins A, C and E, as well as omega-3 fatty oils. These nutritious ingredients make organic foods better for our bodies, and for the planet.

Organic foods are produced with sustainable farming practices that promote soil quality and biological diversity. They are free of toxic chemicals, irradiation and sewage effluent.

Organics are often associated with produce. However, organic products can include dairy, meat, poultry and eggs as well as personal care items and pet food.

The USDA defines organic as crops that are grown according to federal standards. Farmers cannot use conventional (non-organic) methods to grow these foods. However, they can use approved natural methods to control pests, like crop rotation and cover crops, or animal feed made of organic materials.

A farmer must also adhere to guidelines about how much fertilizer or pesticide he applies during the growing season. Also, he must rotate his fields between different crops. GMOs, synthetic insecicides, artificial growth hormones or synthetic fertilizers can't be used by farmers.

Produces labelled as 100% organic meet all requirements. But some farms do not label their products as 100% organic because it would confuse consumers. Instead, they will call their product "made using organic ingredients." "

How To

Organic foods: Are organic foods healthier?

Organic foods are grown without the use chemical pesticides or synthetic fertilisers. They are grown in natural environments without artificial inputs (fungicides/herbicides/hormones, antibiotics or genetic engineering). Cover crops, crop rotation, crop rotation, composting animal manure as well as recycling wastewater are all organic farming practices.

The USDA National Organic Program (NOP) was established in 2002 to regulate the production, handling, processing, labelling, sale, and distribution of organic products sold in the United States. NOP regulations assure that organic agricultural products comply with the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act. Furthermore, the NOP rules require organic products to be free of banned substances such as pesticides residues and growth hormones.

In the U.S., there are two types of certification programs available for producers who want their products labelled "organic": one for farmers and ranchers and another for manufacturers. Both programs require an annual audit of the operations in order to confirm compliance with stringent standards. This service is offered by several certifying agents, such as the CCOF Certified Organic Farmers & Ranchers or Quality Assurance International. The three organizations all provide verification by third parties that farms have followed strict guidelines for environmental stewardship as well as labour practices and the care of livestock.

According to the USDA's Economic Research Service, organic agriculture accounted for $4.7 billion in sales in 2013. The retail spending on organic products accounted for nearly $1.5 billion in 2013, a 23 percent increase over 2009. The number of grocery stores that sold organic products increased 12 percent over the same period. Direct purchases of organic produce saw a 29 percent increase in spending, while seafood, meat, poultry and eggs experienced a 1 percent growth.

While organic food costs more, consumers say its quality justifies the added expense. Consumer Reports found that 88 per cent of respondents would be willing to pay more for organic food if the nutritional value was higher. Health Affairs also published a study showing that organic foods are less likely for people to get heart disease, diabetes, cancer, or obesity.

Even though there is no evidence organic foods cause or treat diseases, some studies show that they can improve overall health by reducing pesticide and other contaminants exposure. A review of 31 studies that were published in 2010 found that organically raised beef has significantly lower levels than conventionally raised beef. Similar results were also reached by a separate analysis of 11 2012 studies.

The Environmental Working Group produced a 2014 report that compared organic and non-organic chickens, pork, beef and lamb. The Environmental Working Group also found that E.coli O157 has been associated with fewer human illnesses in children and adults since 2006, when USDA began requiring stricter organic standards for animal production.
